Global Mammography Equipment Market to Exceed $650m by 2019
The global mammography equipment market amounted to approximately $420m in 2012 and is expected reach more than $650m by 2019, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6%, forecasts new study on ASDReports.com.

The new report states that Hologic was the leader in the global mammography equipment market in 2012 with a 49% share, followed by GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare and FujiFilm Holdings Corporation with 20%, 15% and 5% shares, respectively.

According to the study, this market is primarily driven by technical advances in Digital Radiography (DR) such as breast tomosynthesis, C-View 2D, contrast-enhanced mammography and changes in Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) algorithms. The high incidence of breast cancer in developed economies will also continue to drive demand for mammography equipment during the forecast period.

Srikanth Venkataraman, analyst, says: “These advancements have led to improvements in breast cancer detection rates and a reduction in image acquisition and reconstruction time, which has in turn enabled medical practitioners to handle a higher volume of procedures.”

In most developed countries, there is a fixed reimbursement fee for DR, but compensation for breast tomosynthesis procedures is either lacking or inadequate.

However, an improvement in the reimbursement scenario for breast tomosynthesis could be underway in the US, since the American College of Radiology published a coding guidance earlier this year for the performance of the procedure.

Venkataraman, says: “This is an important step forward as the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is expected to follow suit and allocate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for breast tomosynthesis procedures. If allocated, CPT codes would provide a fixed reimbursement fee for imaging centers and hospitals using such procedure.

“Furthermore, this would considerably boost the adoption of mammography equipment during the forecast period, which could potentially drive the market at double-digit growth rates,” concludes the analyst.
