Global Packaging Survey 2013. Changes in Demand for Packaging Types, Trends and Preferences
Executives from the global packaging industry identify ‘cost cutting measures’ and ‘environmental issues’ as the key drivers of changes in the global packaging industry. According to the results of Canadean’s annual survey, 62% of respondents identified ‘cost cutting measures’ and ‘environmental issues’ as equally important key drivers of changes in the global packaging industry. Furthermore, 64% of senior-level respondents express ‘environmental issues’ as the key factor to influence changes in the global packaging industry. In addition, ‘R&D (innovation)’ and ‘cost cutting measures’ are identified as other factors by 60% and 59% of senior-level respondents respectively.

Overall, executives from the global packaging industry identified attributes such as ‘design’, ‘effectiveness of the packaging’, and ‘eco-friendly’ as the most significant influences on the consumer’s perception of packaging. Respondents across all four regions agree that ‘design’ and ‘comfort’ are the most the important features to impress consumer’s perception of packaging.

Global packaging industry company respondents have a positive outlook towards glass product types; of these respondents, 37% expect demand for ‘bottles’ to increase, while 25% expect demand for ‘jars’ to increase. In addition, 33% and 31% of respondents expect demand for the rigid metal ‘can (aerosol, drink, food and paint)’ and ‘bottle’ to increase during 2013 respectively.

Respondents expressed a positive outlook regarding the demand for ‘flexible packaging types’. The survey results reveal that 73% of respondents equally forecast the demand for ‘pouch’ and ‘film and foil’ to increase in 2013. Furthermore, 61% of respondents expect demand for ‘carton and box’ to increase during 2013, and 56% of respondents equally expect the demand for ‘pouch and bag’ and ‘sachet’ to increase in 2013.
