UK healthcare market profile to 2016-2017
The total market size for ICT in the UK public health sector exceeded £2.4bn in 2011-12, and Kable forecasts it will exceed £2.9bn in 2016-17. There will be consistent growth across the five-year period, at a CAGR of 3.4%.  The market will peak in 2015-16 at £3.07bn, but then faces a minor decline the following year.  The year of the highest year-on-year growth is set to be 2013-14 (9.1%), largely because more than 200 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs)
will take over responsibility for primary care in England in April 2013.

The overall market sizing includes primary care organisations in England (the outgoing PCTs and the incoming CCGs), secondary care organisations in England (acute, mental, ambulance and care trusts), as well as health organisations in the other three nations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) where primary and secondary care are integrated. Large non-departmental public bodies such as NHS Direct were also included in the total. Finally, large centralised initiatives such as the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) and large outsourcing contracts have been included in a separate section.

Primary care in England represents approximately 19% of ICT spending in the UK, while secondary care represents 43.4%. NPfIT and other large outsourcing contracts account for 31.4% of the market, while the combined spending of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland is just 6.2% of the total.
